Of course, many other instances of convictions for espionage and spying took place. These include spies for the Chinese, such as Indian American engineer Noshir Gowadia, who sold Beijing information on stealth technology; Chi Mak, a defense contractor trafficking sensitive technological information regarding the navy; and as far back as the Korean War, Larry Chin, a U.S. Army translator who gave the Chinese information that may have protracted that conflictâand then kept providing them with information until his arrest in 1985. It includes spying for allies, such as the work Jonathan Pollard did for the Israelis. It also includes the spying former Defense Intelligence Agency analyst Ana Montes did for the Cubans. (I once co-hosted a scenario exercise on Cuba at which one of the âexpertâ participants was Montes, then known to us only as a representative of the Defense Intelligence Agency.)
Naturally, during the âWar on Terrorâ a new set of concerns was raised, and top priority was given to rooting out potentially dangerous extremists here in the United States or Americans who had gone to the Middle East to work for our enemies. Notable cases included that of John Walker Lindh, known as the âAmerican Taliban,â who was raised in Northern California, went to Afghanistan, worked alongside the Taliban, and then was captured by the United States three months after the September 11 attacks on the United States. Lindh said he had joined the Taliban because he believed in their form of Islam. While being tried he stated, âI have never understood jihad to mean anti-Americanism or terrorism. I condemn terrorism on every level, unequivocally.â He was sentenced to twenty years in prison and served seventeen, released in May of 2019.
A different illustration of the kind of cases faced by the very different sort of war we have faced in trying to combat Islamic extremism is that of Anwar al-Awlaki. Born in New Mexico to Yemeni parents, al-Awlaki was raised partially in the United States and partially in Yemen. He attended Colorado State University and later also studied at San Diego State University in California and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Active in Muslim organizations throughout his life, he became an imam and then was increasingly radicalized. He was seen to advocate for extremist causes, two of the 9/11 hijackers were known to have attended his sermons and later began working for an organization, the Charitable Society for Social Welfare, that was alleged by the FBI to be a front channeling funds to terrorists. Charismatic and a compelling speaker, he drew many followers and even led a service for Muslim congressional staffers. Minor run-ins with the law and growing suspicion of his role as a dangerous agitator led him to leave the United States in 2002, first traveling to the United Kingdom and then to Yemen. There he became deeply involved with al-Qaeda and served as a âsenior recruiter,â according to the FBI. In the wake of the shooting at Fort Hood in Texas by Nidal Malik Hasan,
